Sandis Āķis - new President in Latvia
Sandis Āķis has been elected president of the Latvian Cycling Federation (LRF), and thus the businessman, cycling supporter and athlete will lead the LRF for the next four years.
In the LRF development plan for the period 2020 to 2024, Āķis has indicated that great emphasis will be placed on the construction of cycle paths in infrastructure problems, as well as ensuring that the track built in Mežaparks is rebuilt in accordance with the requirements of the International Cycling Union (UCI). During his reign, Āķis plans to work more closely with the Riga City Council to promote the construction of bicycle lanes.
Āķis is determined to host many international competitions over the next four years, including the UCI-level Grand Fondo cycling competition.
Election of LRF council members also took place and in the future Linards Veide, Ivo Čerbakovs, Normunds Malnačs, Uldis Ālītis, Mārtiņš Ķeņģis and Edgars Dupats, who were re-elected, will work in the LRF council.
The term of office of the current president of the LRF Igo Japiņa and the council formed by him expires this month. At the general meeting of LRF members held in July, Japiņš informed the members that he did not plan to run for a third term in a row. Japiņš led the federation in the period 2012 to 2020.
