Nordic Cycling Outlines New Strategic Direction at Meeting in Tallinn

01/12/2025

Tallinn, Estonia – 29 November 2025
Nordic Cycling gathered its member federations in Tallinn to discuss the organisation's strategic direction for the coming years. The meeting was opened by Chair Raivo Rand, followed by greetings from Estonian Olympic Committee President Kersti Kaljulaid, who emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening European sport.

The discussion focused on the future format of Nordic Championships, as several disciplines have struggled with irregular participation. While BMX, XCO and Gravel have continued successfully, other disciplines such as Road, Track and Cyclo-cross face organisational and calendar challenges. Delegates agreed that some sports may shift from a championship model to a more sustainable Nordic Cup structure, with further proposals to be developed in 2026.

Commissaire development was highlighted as one of Nordic Cycling's strongest areas. The practical training projects in BMX and Cyclo-cross in 2025 received excellent feedback, and the long-running Road Commissaire Exchange continues to raise officiating standards. UEC confirmed ongoing support for Nordic commissaires at European events and encouraged joint applications for solidarity funding.

The commissions presented their visions for the future: the Road Commission will explore establishing a Nordic Road Cup and develop a shared race calendar; MTB representatives discussed planning a Nordic XCO Cup for the coming seasons; BMX confirmed preparations for the 2026 Nordic Championships in Sweden; and the Track Commission proposed joint training camps to strengthen the discipline regionally. Across all commissions, the need for clearer rules, reduced equipment barriers and improved cooperation was widely acknowledged.

UEC President Enrico Della Casa addressed the meeting remotely, noting that Nordic countries are well-represented in UEC and UCI bodies and hold a strong and respected voice in European cycling. He invited Nordic Cycling to present its activities at the 2026 UEC Congress.

For 2026, Nordic Championships will take place in BMX, XCO and Gravel, with other disciplines focusing on development work and preparing new formats for 2027. Nordic Cycling will continue expanding commissaire education and regional cooperation.
